nota
Built in the 13th century over ancient Roman fortifications, it has one of the tallest keeps in Portugal (a keep is the main tower of a medieval castle, the last line of defence in case of an invasion). Climbing the tower, I noticed many symbols carved into the stone walls, saw the windows designed for an archer to shoot from the spiral staircase, and at the top I saw the trench where they would pour boiling oil onto potential invaders at the castle gate.
